Y2k : The Virus
Perhaps a better title to this section is Y2k : The Viruses. Y2k viruses are regular viruses
that somehow got into your computer (not likely) and will go off when the clock turns over. These
viruses have many big buisnesses worried but not scared because the viruses really aren't a huge threat.
Y2k : The Bug
This is an error of computer programmers of the late 70's to around 1996. Instead of the clock registering
four digits it registered two (ie '99 or '00). You can see where this would be a problem. Of
the two, the Y2k bug is more unpredictable. Only 10% of computers with the Y2k error will have problems on 12:00:00
January 1, 2000. Around 55% of the rest of the problems will occur later within the year. But
what will happen? Not many people know for sure.(I sure don't) Most experts say that a few date
errors will occur, screwing up many things such as licsense plates and even checking account balances. Yes,
even these so called Y2k ready banks aren't sure whats going to happen or if they are complient and up to
date. A great example for this is NASA. NASA, who has billions of dollars to spend and is composed
of some of the brainiest people in America, decided they had better be safe than sorry and ditched the rest of
the Hubble Telescope mission to get the shuttle back before the New Year. You may think, they got most of
it done right? Well, they had 17 more things to put on the Hubble for good performance. The next time
they can go to the Hubble is in 2001.(the Hubble will work though) Thats a pretty good example of how sure
America is.
Conclusion
Just so everyone knows, those online tests aren't reliable. Yes the may be right but they aren't 100% sure. More
like 40% sure. But you know what, nothing major (just a few annoyences) is going to happen.
